When making lace windows then you must treat lace fabrics in the same way as you would other home furnishings by laundering according to fiber content. Most heavy lace fabrics are cotton or cotton based and substantial enough to withstand a delicate cycle wash in a machine. For preference, and to retain a bright white color, use a biological detergent. If you are unsure, you can wash these fabrics by hand with a handwashing soap powder.

Allow the lace to dry naturally in an airy place away from direct sunlight.

Synthetic lace fabrics can be washed in the same way, but check their fiber content to choose the correct washing program. If they become a bit dull and lifeless use a proprietary nylon whitener. If you prefer a warm natural shade for your cotton lace, dip it in cold tea. The longer the curtain is submerged the darker the shade of beige.

Covering a Wide Picture Window

To cover a wide window, lace panels can be placed side by side, with edges butting together. In this way the decorative side edges can be left free and visible. With this method the casing is not made from the lace panels. You will need a length of sheer fabric in the same color to form a casing. This should be as long as the panel widths and twice the width of the casing depth, plus seam allowances.

1. Measure Up Your Lace Windows

Lay the lace panels, with edges butting, right side up. Measure up for the length of the finished panels and mark the position of the casing.

2. Pin and Stitch Top Edge

Fold the sheer fabric strip in half length ways and pin the raw edges along the marked casing line on the right side of the lace. Stitch in place across the top edges of all the panels. Trim excess lace.

3. Zig-Zag Stitch

Turn the strip to the wrong side, with the seam to the top edge. Pin and zigzag stitch across the folded edge forming the casing. Stitch again close to top edge.

4. Match Up Designs

When placing two panels side by side, make sure that the design matches across the join.

Stitching borders

If you prefer to join decorative panels together, instead of butting the edges together, overlay the two edges and machine zigzag stitch together with a wide stitch, following the line of the decorative edge.
